Our History

For more than six decades, our organisation has been shaped by the communities it serves. What began as a collection of small credit unions supporting local workers has evolved into a purpose-driven mutual committed to strengthening communities across the ACT and surrounds.

Throughout this journey, one principle has remained constant, financial services should work for people and contribute to stronger, more resilient communities.

Today, as GoodLoop, we continue that legacy with a renewed focus on community investments and sustainable impact.

A community-driven beginning

The foundations of our organisation were laid in the late 1950s, when local credit unions were established to provide accessible financial services to workers and their families. These member-owned institutions were built on cooperation, trust and community support. Over time, several credit unions across the region came together, combining their strengths to better serve their growing membership. Through mergers and collaboration, the organisation expanded its reach while maintaining its commitment to member ownership and community benefit.

As the organisation evolved, it broadened its services and strengthened its ability to support members and communities.

This period saw the consolidation of multiple credit unions and financial service firms, allowing the organisation to build greater capability while remaining focused on its founding purpose — delivering trusted financial services and reinvesting value back into the communities it serves.

The formation of Service One marked an important milestone, bringing together a number of organisations under a shared vision of community-focused banking.

The formation of Service One marked an important milestone, bringing together a number of organisations under a shared vision of community-focused financial services. In the early 2020s, the organisation continued to evolve through further mergers and the transition to operating Community Bank branches in partnership with Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, strengthening its ability to support members and invest in local communities.

A new chapter – GoodLoop

In 2025, the organisation entered a new phase of its evolution with the rebrand to GoodLoop.

The name reflects a forward-looking vision: creating a continuous loop of positive impact helping communities thrive, and where strong communities create lasting benefits for members.

While the name has changed, the values that have guided the organisation for more than 60 years remain the same — member ownership, community investment and a commitment to doing good.
