Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
Supporting inclusive and accessible living
GoodLoop is committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen communities and improve quality of life. One area of focus is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) — housing designed to support people living with significant and complex disabilities.
SDA forms part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which provides funding and support to eligible Australians living with disability. These homes are specifically designed to enable people to live more independently while accessing the care and support they need.
What is Specialist Disability Accommodation?
Specialist Disability Accommodation refers to purpose-built housing designed to meet the needs of people with high or complex support requirements.
These homes include features such as:
• wheelchair accessibility
• modified bathrooms and living spaces
• assistive technology and safety features
• accessible communal areas
The goal is to provide residents with a safe, supportive environment that enables greater independence and participation in everyday life.
Many SDA homes are designed as four-bedroom residences, with space for support staff and specialised equipment to assist residents with their daily needs.
Types of SDA Housing
The NDIS recognises different SDA design categories depending on the support needs of residents.
These include:
Improved Liveability - Homes designed for people with sensory, intellectual or cognitive impairments requiring enhanced accessibility.
Robust Housing - Accommodation designed for individuals with complex behavioural or support needs.
High Physical Support - Homes equipped with specialised technology and design features for people who require extensive physical support or assistive equipment.
Supporting independence and wellbeing
Specialist Disability Accommodation provides more than housing, it creates opportunities for people with disabilities to live more independently and participate in their communities.
Benefits of SDA housing include:
• Greater independence and autonomy for residents
• Access to safe and purpose-built accommodation
• Reduced reliance on institutional care
• Opportunities for social interaction and community participation
• Peace of mind for families and carers
Many SDA homes also host community-based activities, providing opportunities for residents and their families to connect through social programs and shared events.
Our Community Partnerships
